Zaha Hadid, in full Dame Zaha Hadid, (born October 31, 1950, Baghdad, Iraq-- died March 31, 2016, Miami, Florida, U.S.), Iraqi-born British designer known for her extreme deconstructivist designs. In 2004 she became the very first lady to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
Early Life And Career
Hadid started her studies at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, receiving a bachelor's degree in mathematics. Hadid established her own London-based firm, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), in 1979.
In 1983 Hadid acquired global acknowledgment with her competition-winning entry for The Peak, a leisure and leisure centre in Hong Kong. This design, a "horizontal skyscraper" that moved at a dynamic diagonal down the hillside site, established her visual: motivated by Kazimir Malevich and the Suprematists, her aggressive geometric styles are defined by a sense of instability, fragmentation, and movement. This fragmented style led her to be grouped with designers referred to as "deconstructivists," a classification made popular by the 1988 landmark exhibit "Deconstructivist Architecture" held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Hadid's style for The Peak was never ever understood, nor were most of her other extreme designs in the 1980s and early '90s, consisting of the Kurfürstendamm (1986) in Berlin, the Düsseldorf Art and Media Centre (1992-- 93), and the Cardiff Bay Opera House (1994) in Wales. Hadid began to be known as a "paper architect," suggesting her styles were too progressive to move beyond the sketch stage and actually be constructed. This impression of her was heightened when her wonderfully rendered designs-- typically in the type of exceptionally detailed coloured paintings-- were displayed as artworks in significant museums.
Constructed Projects
Hadid's first significant built task was the Vitra Fire Station (1989-- 93) in Weil am Rhein, Germany. In all these projects, Hadid even more explored her interest in producing interconnecting areas and a dynamic sculptural type of architecture.
Hadid solidified her credibility as an architect of built works in 2000, when work began on her style for a new Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. The structure's strategy gently curves up after the visitor goes into the building; Hadid stated she hoped this would develop an "urban carpet" that invites individuals into the museum.
Fame And Controversies
In 2010 Hadid's boldly imaginative style for the MAXXI museum of modern art and architecture in Rome made her the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize for the best structure by a British designer finished in the previous year. Hadid's fluid undulating style for the Heydar Aliyev Center, a cultural centre that opened in 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, won the London Design Museum's Design of the Year in 2014.
Hadid's remarkable accomplishments were all the more amazing considering she was working in a market mainly dominated by men. The troublesome site for the London Aquatics Centre forced Hadid to scale back her design, while installing demonstrations, notably from preeminent Japanese designers, led her to scrap her strategy entirely for the New National Stadium for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. When asked about the deaths, Hadid objected to her duty as an architect to guarantee safe working conditions, and her remarks were extensively regarded as insensitive.
Other Projects And Notable Awards
Hadid taught architecture at many locations, consisting of the Architectural Association, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and Yale University. She also worked as a furniture designer, a designer of interior areas such as restaurants, and a set designer, notably for the 2014 Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Mozart's Così fan tutte.

At her abrupt death from a cardiovascular disease while being dealt with for bronchitis in 2016, Hadid left 36 unfinished projects, including the 2022 World Cup arena, the Antwerp Port House (2016 ), and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (2017; KAPSARC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her service partner, Patrik Schumacher, presumed management of her company, guaranteeing the completion of existing commissions and the procurement of brand-new ones.
In addition to the Pritzker Prize and the Stirling Prize, her various awards consisted of the Japan Art Association's Praemium Imperiale reward for wangjing soho architecture (2009) and the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture (2016 ), RIBA's highest honour. Hadid was a member of the Encyclopædia Britannica Editorial Board of Advisors (2005-- 06). In 2012 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
